Cumin is a slender annual herb of the carrot family with thread-like leaves and small white or pink flowers in umbrella-shaped clusters, followed by ridged, oblong seed-like fruits. Native to the Irano-Turanian region, it is widely grown as a winter crop in western India.
The fruit, commonly called the seed, is used. Ayurveda calls it Jiraka and values it as a digestive spice traditionally used in herbal waters and classical preparations. It is one of the most familiar spices in Indian cooking.
