The date palm is a tall palm growing up to thirty metres, with a crown of feather-shaped leaves and heavy bunches of sweet fruits. Native to the region from the Gulf to Pakistan and India, it is grown in dry regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

In Ayurveda the fruit is known as Kharjura and is described in classical texts as nourishing. The fruit has traditionally been used in strengthening preparations for general wellness.
