Roselle is an annual shrub of the mallow family, likely native to Africa and now grown across India for its fleshy, bright red calyces and sour leaves. Botanists have recently moved it from Hibiscus to the genus Sabdariffa, as Sabdariffa gossypiifolia, though Hibiscus sabdariffa remains the familiar name.
The calyces are used to make tangy teas, drinks and jams, and the leaves are cooked as a sour green. In Indian traditional practice it is used to support digestion and in skin care. The calyx and leaf are used.
