Babchi is an erect annual herb of the pea family with rounded, gland-dotted leaves and small purple flowers. It grows in dry plains of India and produces small, hard, aromatic black seeds.
Known in Sanskrit as Bakuchi, the seed has a traditional place in Ayurvedic skin care, especially in oils for pigmentation concerns. Seed preparations should be used only under expert guidance, as oral use has been linked with liver injury.
