Black gram is a bean grown in South Asia since ancient times. The bushy annual plant carries hairy pods with small black seeds; split and skinned, they appear white and are sold as urad dal, a key ingredient in idli, dosa and many South Indian dishes.
As Masha, it is described in Ayurvedic texts as a heavy, nourishing pulse, and it is traditionally included in strengthening preparations and in massage oils such as Mashataila used for body care. The seed is the part used.
