Brahmi, or water hyssop, is a creeping, succulent perennial herb with small fleshy oblong leaves and pale white to lilac flowers. It spreads across marshes, pond edges and other damp ground in India, including Kerala, and occurs in wetlands throughout the warmer regions of the world.
The whole plant is used. Ayurvedic tradition classes Brahmi as a medhya rasayana, an herb associated with the mind and memory, and it is a well-known ingredient in traditional hair oils and herbal ghees. Modern evidence for its effects remains limited, and it is described here only in its traditional context.
