Butterfly pea is a slender climbing vine of the pea family with bright blue, conch-shaped flowers. It grows wild and in gardens across tropical India, including Kerala, where it is called shankhupushpam.
Known in Sanskrit as Aparajita, its root, flower and seed have a place in Ayurveda, and in South India it is sometimes used as Shankhapushpi. The blue flowers are traditionally used in herbal teas and in hair-care preparations for dark, healthy-looking hair.
