Hog plum is a deciduous tree of the cashew family with pinnate leaves, small white flowers and sour, oval fruits that ripen yellow. Native to Southeast Asia, it is widely naturalised in India, including the forests and gardens of Kerala, where it is called ambazham.
In Ayurveda it is known as Amrataka. The sour fruit is used in pickles and chutneys and has traditionally been used for digestive comfort, while the bark is used in astringent preparations.
