The caper bush is a sprawling, spiny perennial shrub with round, fleshy leaves and large white to pinkish flowers with long purple stamens. It grows in dry, rocky places in northwest India and around the Mediterranean.
Known in Sanskrit as Himsra, its root bark has a traditional place in Ayurveda and Unani practice and is used in preparations for joint comfort. The flower buds are the pickled capers used in cooking.
