Jivanti is a perennial, much-branched twining climber of the Apocynaceae family that grows in the drier regions of India, especially Gujarat and Rajasthan. It has a milky latex, leathery leaves and clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers, followed by long slender pods.
It is the officially recognised source of Jivanti in Ayurveda, where it is valued in classical texts as a rejuvenating and nourishing herb. It is an ingredient of several traditional formulations, including some versions of Chyawanprash. The root and whole plant are used.
