Neem is a fast-growing evergreen tree of the mahogany family that can reach fifteen to twenty metres, with feathery compound leaves of toothed leaflets, small fragrant white flowers and olive-like yellow fruits. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is a familiar roadside and village tree across India and is grown throughout the tropics.
Leaves, bark and seed oil are used. Ayurveda describes Nimba as bitter and cooling, and it is traditionally used in skin care, hair care and oral care preparations. Neem twigs have long served as natural tooth-cleaning sticks, and the oil is used in soaps and herbal hair oils.
