Persian lilac is a deciduous tree of the mahogany family with feathery leaves and fragrant lilac flowers, followed by clusters of yellow berries. Native to Indomalaya and Australasia, it is common across India, including the hills of Kerala.
In Ayurveda it is known as Mahanimba. The bark and leaf have traditionally been used in external preparations for skin care. The plant, especially the fruit, is poisonous and is used only after classical purification under qualified supervision.
