White dammar is a large evergreen tree of the family Dipterocarpaceae, endemic to the Western Ghats and common in Kerala. It grows in wet evergreen forests at low and mid elevations, and when wounded its bark yields a pale, fragrant resin. It is threatened by habitat loss.
The resin, known in Ayurveda as Sarja and in Kerala as kundirikkam, has traditionally been used in medicated oils and ointments for joint comfort and as a fumigant for its fragrance.
