Wild cinnamon is a tree of the laurel family, up to about 15 metres tall, found only in the Western Ghats of India. It has glossy, aromatic, three-veined leaves and grows in Kerala's evergreen forests, where it is known locally as vayana or edana.
It is thought to be one of the sources of the ancient malabathrum leaf trade. In Kerala the fragrant leaves are used to wrap steamed sweets, and the bark and leaf have a place in local traditional and aromatic use.
