Wild indigo is a branched, perennial herb of the pea family with pinnate leaves, small purple flowers and slender pods. It grows as a common wasteland weed in dry soils across India, including Kerala, where it is called kozhinjil.
Known in Sanskrit as Sharapunkha, the whole plant is a classical Ayurvedic herb. It is traditionally included in preparations for liver and digestive wellness and for general wellbeing.
